Science Club

Newman Science Club aims to inculcate scientific attitude, scientific thinking and experimental learning among students. Students get an opportunity to expose their intellectual skills and also to share their scientific and educational experiences  with the peer group through the science club. Science club is a better platform for students to identify their scientific skills and fulfil their quest to acquire knowledge through scientific experiments or activities for which they don’t get enough opportunities within their curriculum.

Objectives

  1. To develop interest among students in science.
  2. To encourage, motivate and aware students in the applications of science and its impact on daily life
  3. To provide proper incentives and inspiration for the pursuit of scientific knowledge by broadening their scientific outlook and temper.
  4. To develop the spirit and attitude of healthy competition for the individual and social cause among the students.
  5. To provide an opportunity for the development of the constructive, explorative and inventive faculties of the students.
  6. To create interest in the latest inventions and discoveries of science in various fields and to get acquainted with the life history and contributions of great scientists.

SCIENCE CLUB ACTIVITIES 2021-2022

Birthday Celebration of Heisenberg

The Department of Physics Newman College in association with the science club organised a birthday celebration of the renowned German physicist Werner Heisenberg on 05 December 2021, from 3.15 pm to 4.00 pm, at Mar Pothanamuzhy Hall in the college. The main purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the contributions given by Heisenberg in Physics. The hall was filled with the presence of almost 40 people to witness.

The programme was coordinated by Mr Noble C. Kurian, and well anchored by Anju Thomas, and the pleasant welcome speech was given by Nima M U. The talk, "Heisenberg, the Man of Uncertainty" was given by Aqueena Tresia Cherian on the life of Heisenberg and his contributions. She focussed on the personal journey of Heisenberg, and the audience received ample information regarding the legendary scientist and the man himself. It was lively and delivered, more than just many facts, pointing out little and thought-provoking details. It was followed by a wonderful presentation by Annie Sinta C S, for which she garnered great applause from the gathering. Finally, the meeting came to an end with a vibrant vote of thanks delivered by Kochurani Lalu

Commemoration of J.J. Thomson and Henri Becquerel, Carbon Dating

The Department of Physics Newman College in association with the science club organised a marvellous program on 16 December 2021, from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, at Mar Pothanamuzhy Hall in the college. This event was quite distinct and different with the amalgamation of various talks and presentations. A discourse commemorating the birthday of the famous French scientist Antoine Henri Becquerel (December 15), a presentation on the Carbon dating method, and a celebration on the birthday of the renowned British physicist Sir J. J. Thomson (December 18) were the special programs that took place on that day. Even though these important events were on different days, all of them celebrated together on that auspicious Thursday afternoon.

Kochurani Lalu presented a well-prepared note on the topic Carbon dating method. The last event was a description given by Praveena of the famous British physicist Sir J. J Thomson, as a part of celebrating his birthday. Mr. Noble C. Kurian coordinated the event.
