Newman College is an institution of higher education, established, owned and administered by the diocese of Kothamangalam. It is named after John Henry Cardinal Newman, one of the greatest luminaries of all times in the field of higher education. Realising the great necessity of a central institution of higher studies for the thousands of students stepping each year out of the numerous high schools in Thodupuzha area. His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathew Pothanamuzhy, the Bishop of Kothamangalam decided to establish a college at Thodupuzha.
Application was submitted to the University of Kerala in October, 1963 and sanction was received on 5th May 1964. Necessary land was bought and the foundation stone for the college building was laid on 9th May, 1964. As permanent buildings could not be got ready by the beginning of the academic year, the college gratefully accepted the hospitality of the Thenamkunnu Church that offered the new town-church building and presbytery as temporary site for the college. The college was inaugurated on 10th July 1964 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathew Pothanamuzhy, the Patron and Proprietor.400 students were admitted in 1964 to the first year of the Pre-Degree Course. The College started functioning in the present campus on 15th December 1964. The College was upgraded by introducing Degree Courses in July 1967. The college crossed another landmark by introducing P.G. Course in Mathematics in November 1984.
Newman College is the leading college in the Idukki District, with 5 post graduate courses imparting higher education for over 100 students of this backward district. Newman has 68 members on the teaching staff and 33 on the non-teaching staff.Following the Footsteps of Cardinal Newman in the pursuit of truth, this institution of Christian higher education aims at the total development of good and responsible citizens with intellectual excellence, integrity of character, commitment to the society and above all, love of God.
