 Overview of the department

The Department of Malayalam started functioning in 1964, Prof. A.T. John as its sole member and it has been offering second language since then. As per the University order number 2464/A1/2014 academic, sanction was granted for B. A Malayalam by the M.G University and the first batch was admitted in 2014. According to the sanctioned strength 28 students were admitted. When B.A Malayalam started most of the members of the faculty were guest lecturers except Fr. Dr. Vincent Joseph and Fr. Dr. Raju Jacob. The department has a very rich tradition of success down the decades.

History of the Department

The Department of Malayalam started functioning in 1964 with Prof. A.T. John as its sole member. Sr. Elsamma Joseph became its second member when she joined  in 1967. Prof  P.J. Joseph took charge as the head of the  department in 1970. Following the retirement of  Prof.  P. J. Joseph,  Prof . A. T. John stepped into his shoes in 1973. Prof.  K. I. Antony and Prof. M. T. Joseph joined the department in 1974 and 1979 respectively. Sri. K.M. Mathew in 1981 and Sri. P.M. Ulahannan in 1985 joined the department enriching it with their scholarship. Sr. Elsamma Joseph was the Head of the Department from 1992 onwards . When Sri. P.M. Ulahannan retired in March 2006, Fr.Raju Jacob joined the department. Later Sri. T.J. Joseph and  Fr.Jestin  K. Kuriakose  joined the faculty. The Department initiated B A Malayalam in 2013. Fr. Jestin K. Kuriakose transferred to Nirmala College Muvattupuzha and  Dr. Vincent Joseph Joined the department. Most of the members of the faculty were guest lecturers except Fr. Dr. Vincent Joseph and Fr. Dr .Raju Jacob. Fr. Dr .Fr. Vincent Joseph retired in 2019. Three more , have joined the faculty in 2021. They are Dr. Sr. Bincy C J , Dr. Afina Mary Saju and Dr. Sobhitha Joy . Fr. Dr. Raju Jacob , the HOD of the department of Malayalam retired from service on 31st March 2022. Dr. Sr. Bincy C.J. is appointed as the HOD of the department on 1st  April 2022. Dr.Sr. Biji M.P. and Dr.Annie Thomas were transferred from Nirmala College Muvattupuzha to this department on 1st  June 2022. Dr.Sobhitha Joy was transferred to Nirmala College Muvattupuzha on the same day.

The department of Malayalam in Newman College Thodupuzha has a very rich tradition of success down the decades.
