Physical Education

The Physical Education department in Newman College was started since the very inceptions of the college on 10th July 1964, initially with the Pre-degree course. The college was upgraded with the introduction of degree course in July 1967. The PG course started in 1984. Now it is a leading college of Idukki district with many degree and Post Graduate Courses.

          The department of Physical Education was initially managed by Sri. Jacob Jose alone and in 1973 Smt. K.A. Mary also joined as the faculty member of this department. In 1996 Smt. K.A. Mary promoted as HOD, when Sri. Jacob Jose retired. Then Sri. Benny Mathew appointed in the department as the Lecturer. When Smt. K.A. Mary retired on 2001 Sri. Sinu K. Thomas joined in the department as the faculty member. He was proceeded on leave from 2002 to 2013 and resigned. In 2013 Dr. Thomson Joseph transferred from Nirmala College Muvattupuzha to this college as the faculty member. 

          The college has been adequate facilities in Volleyball, Basketball, Football, Badminton, Cricket, Handball, Powerlifting, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Multi Purpose Synthetic Stadium, Fitness centre, Table Tennis, 200 mts. Track, Multipurpose Indoor Stadium (Under construction) etc..

          The department is organised an add on course named first aid and safety education with the help of UGC. An open course named physical, health and life skills education is conducting by the department for the fifth semester under graduate students.

          The college has produced a good number of Indian players especially in volleyball namely Sri. S. Gopinath IPS of Kerala Police, Sri. Jose Varghese, Sri. Joji of central Excise and Customs, Sri. K. Rajeevan Nair, Cochin Port trust and Sri.Binu Jose of Kerala Titanium Trivandrum.
