To be a center of excellence in Commerce Education with global standards by equipping the scholars to meet the requirements of industry, service and entrepreneurship. The world is undergoing a revolutionary transformation due to the advancement in science and technology. This has led to a makeover in the appearance of business enterprises all over the globe. The academicians and scholars in the education institutions have to acquaint themselves with the knowledge explosion in the discipline of Commerce and Management. Hence, we dream and visualize the establishment of a higher learning excellence center in the discipline of commerce and management. Indeed we feel it to be a stepping stone for enriching the cognitive domain of our scholars. We wish to induce the spirit of learning enthusiasm to the dynamic, talented and energetic potential entrepreneurs in an innovative pedagogical style.
Mission of the Department
Holistic development of the scholars through the integration of globally competent commerce education and inculcating values aimed at contributing towards the social capital formation of the world.
The intense desire of the department is to open new windows towards the unseen horizons of skills and knowledge in the ever shining world of Commerce and Management. We attempt to integrate knowledge and practice as the key tools for equipping the learners with high end achievements in this discipline. We always believe in the holistic development of the scholars. The academic and non academic exercises help in the transformation of the scholars.
Overview of the department
The Post Graduate Department of Commerce is one of the oldest departments of Newman College established in 1964. The department has been offering B.com Course since 1980 and has been elevated to PG department in 1995.And it has been scaling heights ever since. Currently the department offers two programmes B.com (Finance and Taxation) one of the most demanded courses of the contemporary academic world and M.com (Finance and Taxation). The department creates a stimulating environment for academic growth of the students. The students have added to the prestige by securing university ranks and high level placements. Industry visits, field trips and corporate talks give adequate practical exposure to the students.
The curriculum is taught by distinguished faculty combining academic excellence and real world experience with dedication and commitment. The department has 7 full time permanent faculty. The department is constantly striving to achieve excellence through instilling academic, innovative social and ethical values in students needed to meet the current demand of the dynamic entrepreneurial academic and corporate world. Apart from classroom teaching there is constant effort to enhance student learning and bring them in contact with the corporate world. Eminent business personalities and academicians are invited for talks, seminars and lectures on a regular basis. To facilitate face to face industry interactions industrial visits are organized for students. The department organises the annual Commerce Fest ESPRIT which hosts various inter collegiate management competitions. Our Alumnae are well placed in various sectors working as Chartered Accountants and business Professionals in reputed firms and as academicians in prestigious educational institutions.
